Dialysis Unit
The Centre
St James Dialysis Centre – a flexible and personal approach to dialysis treatment.
The Centre was opened in May 2005 and was created as a result of a partnership between the Saint James Group and Fresenius Medical Care Limited an international company, which are based in Germany.
The Centre operates primarily as a holiday dialysis Centre providing care for patients with End Stage Renal Failure (ESRF) who would be regarded as being stable on dialysis. As The Centre forms part of one of the most renowned private hospitals in Malta it also has at its disposal all the resources to deal with medical emergencies such as, vascular access problems or patients becoming acutely ill during their stay.
The Centre is located in Sliema, which is one of the best known coastal towns in Malta. It can be reached by all modes of transport as it is on a major bus route, taxis or if you stay in the locality a short stroll via the promenade will get you there in no time.
When planning the Centre we have tried to create a homely atmosphere in order to make the patients treatment and overall stay in Malta more comfortable and enjoyable. The Centre is well illuminated with natural daylight, enjoys sea views and has its independent temperature control system. The Centre consists of six stations including one in an isolation area, which has its own toilet facilities. Each station is equipped with an electric fully adjustable bed, thus ensuring patient’s comfort during their dialysis session. Every station has screening around it in order to ensure privacy where needed, adjustable bed tables, television, oxygen and vacuum ports and an aneroid sphygmomanometer.

The Machines
The Centre is equipped with the Fresenius 4008S haemodialysis machine, which is capable of performing all renal haemodialysis replacement therapies. The machine offers the safety and efficiency of all important treatment modalities within the scope of renal replacement therapies, such as:
Bicarbonate or acetate dialysis
Double, single needle or single needle click clack
Ultrafiltration and sodium profiling
Isolation UF programmes
On line haemodialfiltration
The 4008s haemodialysis machine has an Advanced Dialysis Fluid Circuit and is capable of monitoring among others the following dialysis parameters during treatment:
Online Clearance Monitoring
Blood Volume Management
Blood temperature Management
The machine also has one of the most advanced disinfection and cleaning programmes available, which has been validated to be user and environmentally friendly and economical. This is due to their capability for disinfecting, decalcifying, and cleaning effects followed by a thorough rinse of the whole circuit. It combines both heat and chemical disinfection programmes.
Water Treatment System
The Water treatment system within the Centre was installed and is constantly maintained by Fresenius Medical Limited. It consists of the following components:
Raw water inlet unit
Tap water storage tank
Booster pump
Sand Filter
Particle Filter
Duplex softener
Activated carbon-filter
Fine filter
Particle Filter
Osmosis unit
The system is designed, so as the quality of the water produced meets The Association for the Advancement of Medical Instrumentation (AAMI) guidelines. These include among others limits set for bacteria, endotoxin and key chemicals. The water produced by the plant is routinely analysed by recognised bodies in order to ensure and safe guard the well-being of our patients. In addition the municipal water is also analysed to ensure it meets with the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) potable water standards.
