Evening Primrose

Oenothera Biennis

Herbal medicines have been used since times immemorial to alleviate sickness and pain. Evening primrose is a native North American biennial plant now found growing by road sides and in dry meadows and fields all over the world. The plants are tall, with bright yellow flowers that open in the evening and close up during the day. They are strongly scented with a delicious sweet perfume.

The oil in its seeds contains the essential gamma-linolenic acid (GLA), a valuable essential fatty acid that the body cannot manufacture.

Evening primerose oil has a positive effect on sex hormone response and is known to alleviate mastalgia (breast pain), fibrocystic disease of the breast and menopausal symptoms.

It aids in lowering cholesterol levels and has also been used to treat liver diseases, rheumatoid arthritis and high blood pressure.
